Policing in England and Wales is getting more and more in touch with the needs of the public. It has been raised in recent times that police officers are inaccessible and preoccupied with bundles of paperwork. To this effect, the police are currently experiencing a shift towards a more community based style of policing. Neighbourhood policing is new and here to stay.
The whole point of neighbourhood policing is to interact with the communities to provide greater safety, understanding and confidence in the police force. A relatively new addition to the police armoury has come in the shape of a PCSO. This stands for Police Community Support Officer and these are a new type of police officer. Their role is to support the work of police officers in the local communities and to provide a greater level of police presence in our local areas. Even though Police Community Support Officers are not given the same powers as a normal police officer, their role is greatly valued and they have made a real difference to the state of our communities. As well as being more present in our communities, neighbourhood policing means a greater level of communication. Many police forces across England and Wales have pledged to provide much more information regarding events and occurrences in the local community.
A neighbourhood policing team is also established for all communities and they will work closely with the local residents to ensure a much better level of communication by the police. There are regular meetings and focus groups to set the agenda for crime prevention and neighbourhood policing. To this effect, policing is more citizen centred and the needs of the communities are more effectively fulfilled by the police force.
It is essential that the police create a far more trustworthy presence on our streets. This enables them to be better placed to prevent crime and more able to contact members of the community. This is set to stay under the police reform acts and neighbourhood policing is well set to evolve and nestle itself into the fundamental principles of the police force in England and Wales.
It can be difficult in some cases when the police are miles away for a community to feel safe and secure. For this reason, the police in England and Wales have pledged to provide more neighbourhood policing to really get close to the community. This is the future of policing and here for good.
